Shared Decision Making Summit 2018
Topics at the Summit
The Summit is more discussion and brainstorming than prepared presentations. Topics will be "teed up" by presenters, and attendees will have the liberty to take the discussion where it would be most fruitful.
Accordingly, the Steering Committee has identified the topics below, more as an aid to identify who should attend, than as rigid discussion guardrails. In fact, we are seeking your ideas and input to help shape a more detailed description of the topics, which will be available closer to the date of the Summit.
SDM Pillars
These topics will be discussed in whole-group sessions, with all participants involved in the same topic.
- Patients - how can we create and support a cultural shift towards people expecting, asking, and being prepared for participating in shared decision making style conversations with their healthcare providers?
- Providers - how do we help shift the mindset of providers everywhere to recognize that only by helping to integrate the values and preferences of a patient with medical and scientific details can the best path for an individual be selected?
- Data/Evidence - how can we facilitate the right evidence being available at the right time, in the right way, so that patients and their providers can make the best decision?
SDM Contexts
These topics will be discussed in concurrent sessions, with participants selecting between 2 or 3 topics occurring at one time.
- Adherence - how might shared decision making help people follow through with their selected treatment path (medication, nutrition, therapy, lifestyle, etc)?
- Diversity - with its focus on eliciting and integrating patient values and preferences, how could SDM help minority populations to receive better healthcare, participate in clinical trials, etc?
- Aging Populations - how might shared decision making help patients, caregivers, and providers make , potentially pre-thinking key decisions prior to
- Clinical Research - can SDM be applied in conversations that consider clinical trials as potential options, enriching the patient and provider experience, while increasing clinical research awareness and participation?
- Clinical Trial Registries - how can clinical trial registries be designed based on the values and preferences of patients and caregivers, supporting a more robust shared decision making style of conversation with their providers?
- Diabetes Care - how might shared decision making improve care and outcomes for people with diabetes, and how can we demonstrate these benefits?
- Cardiovascular Care - what would it look like if SDM was broadly implemented within cardiovascular care, and what would it take to get there?
Help Shape the Topics
The high-level topics listed above will be more fully fleshed out prior to the Summit. Please submit your ideas about what direction these topics should take. You may submit multiple times. The deadline for submissions is 23 Nov 2017.
